Beatrice Teo 2D/06

I've stood here for about a year
And sometimes I just shed a tear
That though my mind and thoughts can stray,
Rooted to the ground I'll stay.

With legs I could do so much more,
I'd run and jump and go explore!
But it seems that I am pretty much stuck
In earth and sand and sludge and mud.

All day long I'm forced to see
Happy children running free.
Laughing, playing and having fun;
All these things a plant's never done.

Into my face a toddler peers,
Her shriek of joy so sincere.
She does not know how she is blessed;
With parents, freedom and love in excess.

How I wish for just a while
To be like Man and learn to smile,
To cry, to love, to hate, to feel.
What I won't do to make that deal.

I've stood here for about a year
And sometimes I just shed a tear
That though my mind and thoughts can stray,
Rooted to the ground I'll stay.

From worshipping and sometimes even fearing nature, Man now exploits and takes advantage of it. Trees and greenery that provide us with shade and fresh air have been replaced with modern, high-rise office buildings, and Man is steadily increasing the size of the hole the ozone layer, even though we know that with its complete depletion will come our deaths. With modernization and urbanization, came the idea that Man was superior to nature.
