Prologue
What inspired me to pen this poem, was the sight of a gazebo that sat neatly tucked under a tree. It provided me a picturesque view of the nearby swan lake. Moreover, the gazebo was along side a small hill, with numerous trees that were planted along the stone pathway. The shrubs and grass also shimmered under the sun; it threw me into a dreamlike state, where my surroundings were so surreal and magical. However, what really made the image complete, was the existence of the gazebo – a man-made structure. This theme of “the coexistence between man and nature” then dawned on me. How wonderful it would be if man could always be constantly surrounded by nature. Pathways lead you deeper into the sanctuary where nature is omnipresent. Pavilions sit nicely in the middle of lush greenery, and the clear blue sky acts as a dome that looks over us. Even statues play a part in enhancing the sight of nature. The issues of how man attempts to return to nature played an important role in sparking this theme. As immersing ourselves in nature allows us to escape the modernized world, it would be great if we can continue to remain in this realm of nature. The problems that industrialisation brings about also spurred me to write this poem. I did not concentrate so much on how industrialisation can affect this return to nature, as I wanted to focus more on the coexistence between man and nature.

The Coexistence of Man and Nature
A concrete jungle
Amidst the struggle
Of greenery and modelled rubble.

A path of cement,
To the plants’ lament,
Deemed elegant by our stand.

Can the organic and the inorganic,
Ever exist hand in hand?
“Yes” in man’s eyes,
But “no” the plants cry
We go ahead as planned.

Gazebos erected to threaten the trees.
Pavilions constructed that block the breeze.
Stone paths laid down in the name of our bliss.

Ah it seems so beautiful,
And all seems so peaceful,
This coexistence is simply too meaningful.

No doubt, that nature has been unscarred,
By these uninvited structures,
Only proves our stand
That nature and man
Can exist hand in hand.

This idea of being surrounded by nature,
Is what that begins to inspire
The beauty between man and nature.

With buildings to enhance the natural haven,
Man glorifies this heaven,
By basking in what God has given.
