Tham Zhi Yang 2C/06

Short Write-up:

The poem expresses my feelings over the way man has continuously destroyed the beautiful elements that compose nature. I feel that this is due to the use of machineries, which are very destructive and can wipe out nature at a terrifying rate. I feel that we, being humans with feelings, should reflect on what we have done to nature, as it is still not too late to salvage the situation. This poem is basically inspired by the above photo, which shows a crane at work in the backdrop of beautiful scenery. As we can see that it is an eyesore in the picture and is capable of destroying the beautiful sceneries that nature is able to give us and we should remove it from our world.

Poem:

Tall sky-scrapers that line our street,

Casting shadows that are such an ugly sight.

What had happened to the light that was once so bright?

Now the future seems so blight.

We’ve come thus far with those hideous machines,

Why can’t we open our eyes to see the destruction?

We’re so blinded by the riches that come with the use of these monsters,

Why can’t we stop this horrible obsession?

Those horrendous machines,

Destroying every beautiful part of nature,

Those gigantic monsters,

Destroying things without a trace of what’s left.

Why can’t we see that this is wrong?

When everything’s gone, it will be all to late,

Why is there no one saying that we could change all this?

When everything’s gone, who will take the blame?

Couldn’t we have been more understanding,

And hear the words of those who cried for us to stop?

Couldn’t we have taken a step back,

And realized what we’ve done to nature?

Why do people say that it’s all too late,

When we still have the chance to change what had happened?

Why do we still pretend like everything’s all right,

When we’ve been so wrong for so long?

We ought to stop destroying this beautiful world that we live in,

And learn to appreciate every single bit of it.

We ought to start repairing the damages that we’ve done,

And learn that it is still not too late to make amendments.

So let us open our eyes to what we have done,

And try to undo the damages that we have caused,

So let us learn to appreciate nature once again,

And see her in full bloom, enjoying her magnificence.

We would rejoice on the day where beautiful trees line our streets,

And the shadows casted upon our feet giving us the shade,

We would celebrate on the day where we stand side by side,

One by one underneath the warmth and light of the sun.
