Nicholas Chua Bingkai (aka Rupert the Bear) 2E/06

Prologue
While rushing around the botanical gardens to complete our tasks, my eyes caught sight of this almost miraculous work of art bestowed upon us by nature itself on a peculiar little tree standing near the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage on Symphony Lake. It was a distinct heart shape on the outer bark of the tree. It was not man-made in anyways, it was neither carved nor drawn, but obviously natural.

Fascinated by this unique sight I got inspired to write this haiku, a traditional form of Japanese poetry, for I have always been interested with traditional Japanese art and culture. My haiku aims to capture the profundity and complexity of the relationship love has with nature. In the picture, is the heart shape a symbol, a code, of nature’s relationship with love, where love truly stems from nature itself? Or is love merely a romantic fantasy, an ideology constructed by us humans?

A heart on a tree.
Nature's immortalised art,
a hymn to true love.
