Up There

The main theme of my poem, similar to the ideas of some Romantic poets- like William Wordsworth, revolves around the process of urbanization, which inevitably causes destruction to Man's environment, while Man is lulled by his sucesses in adaptation and survival that he forgets to pay attention to Earth's alarm until it's too late. The encroachment of globalization on natural greenery forces congested cities like Singapore to create what we call the green lungs of the country. The parks are specially created as a respite from the concrete jungle, offering refreshing landscaped scenery for inhabitants to enjoy.

Up There

Up there
Clamouring for sunshine and fresh air
High above the rising fumes of industries and vehicles
Branches like fingers of desperation,
Reach out into the sky.

Up there
Where the clouds form
The atmosphere heats up, as the Earth chokes
With human wastes like overloaded bins
Beyond exaggeration

Up there
As modernization and technology
Send planes and missiles into the air touching lives,
In more ways than one
Some giving, some taking

Look up there
Among the trees, among the leaves
A symbol of human mastery over his environment
Like a master lording over his servants
Look hard; destruction awaits.
